About this book

An engine, an icicle and a kitten help teach the alphabet in the rhyming pages that begin this nursery collection. Edited by Sarah S. Baker, the volume brings short verses and fairy tales together with colour pictures credited to Kronheim. Its contents move from letter learning to royal kitchens, animal visitors and the practical business of building a house that can withstand a wolf.

Repeated exchanges give The Three Little Pigs a rhythm suited to reading aloud, while the brick house leads into further contests of timing and wit. In Puss in Boots, a miller's youngest son inherits a cat who quickly takes charge, carrying gifts to the king and using a grand title for his master. These older nursery versions combine playful language with sudden dangers and sharp consequences. Readers can explore the compact storytelling and compare the familiar characters with versions they already know.
