About this book

A roadside performance brings an Italian baby into a Swedish household already crowded with six boys. Karin welcomes the travelling entertainers with food, then asks her husband Jan to let her care for the infant. She has recently lost her own baby, and the newcomer's need gives her grief a practical answer. The yellow pine cottage becomes the centre of a story about the care people offer one another.

Sarah S. Baker follows Nono beyond that home as he walks towards Stockholm with his pig, Blackie, hoping to meet a princess. A shoemaker shares his cramped cottage but dismisses the boy's plan, while other people answer his story with ridicule. Nono's gratitude for Karin's household and his trust in God help him face these discouragements. Written for young readers, the novel pairs domestic detail with encounters on the road, giving particular attention to kindness, work and persistence in the face of doubt.
