About this book

The Song of Sixpence is a picture book containing Sing a Song of Sixpence, Princess Belle Etoile and an Alphabet of Old Friends. The preface says that, at all events, we learn the poet started with a pocket full, and proceeded to draw on his imagination for all it was worth. The preface is signed Walter Crane, Kensington, Sept: 1909.

The rhyme says that the King was in his counting-house, counting out his money, and the Queen was in the parlour, eating bread and honey. A tale in the book names three Princesses, Roussette, Brunette and Blondine, who lived in retirement with their mother, a Princess who had lost all her former grandeur. A Dove summons a number of foxes, badgers, moles, snails, ants, and all sorts of creatures that burrow in the earth, and Cheri gets off his horse at the entrance of the subterranean passage they made for him.
