About this book
Beneath Crow Nest Mountain, a fairy queen gathers her court to help a sick boy called Charley. In a hollow near the Hudson River, glow-worms light a mossy throne, butterflies draw royal carriages, and elderly fairies travel in nutshell coaches. The queen hopes to ease the child's suffering with pleasant dreams and bring him to the midsummer festivities. Her plans meet resistance from a grumbling prime minister whose dislike of children makes him an easy target for mischief.
Aunt Fanny combines this miniature fairy society with sections about the children's lives and a visit to West Point. When Slyboots tricks a spider into spinning ropes to trip the prime minister, the laughter gives way to a lesson about telling the truth, and Charley asks the queen for mercy. The story's appeal lies in its elaborate woodland inventions, comic court manners, and connection between kindness, forgiveness, and Christian feeling.
