About this book
Joe Matson has just finished a winning season with the Pittston team of the Central League when a letter from his manager brings news: the St. Louis club is likely to draft him into the major leagues. Joe is glad of the chance and the larger pay, but he knows the other pitchers there will not make room for him, and he sets out to earn a place with his arm.
The story follows him from the family breakfast table, where his sister Clara and his mother hear the news, to spring training in the South and the long wait on the bench while a rival is given the starts. A pair of men with a grudge turn up again at the ball park to threaten him, and the chapter titles hint at a lame arm, a tight game and a rescue before the season is out.
This is the fifth book in the Baseball Joe series, written for young readers, with plenty of talk of curves, signs and batting averages from the early days of professional play.
