His father expects two years of serious preparation for college, while Steve and his friend Tom Hall dream of sharing a room and making the football team. Ralph Henry Barbour builds this school novel around the competing claims of sport, study and friendship.

At Brimfield, those competing claims become practical problems. Steve struggles through a Latin lesson under Mr. Simkins, earns extra written work and complains that football leaves him little time for books. Tom offers both a frank reminder and help with the assignment. The classroom exchanges bring humor to a story whose contents also promise tackling practice, matches and quarrels between friends.

Ralph Henry Barbour

Ralph Henry Barbour (1870-1944) was an American novelist who wrote mainly sports fiction for boys, along with light romances and adventure stories. With L. H. Bickford he also wrote as Richard Stillman Powell. His books include "Left Tackle Thayer" and "The Crimson Sweater".
