About this book

A college fire sends four friends back to Centerville just as early winter begins, leaving them with weeks to fill before their studies resume. Frank Langdon, Will Milton, Jerry and Bluff Masters belong to the Rod, Gun, and Camera Club, and their reunion quickly turns into a snowball contest with a rival group. Their shared enthusiasm for outdoor life carries this boys' adventure into the hunting country and lumber camps of Maine.

The woodland episodes combine sporting interests with practical responsibility. When Frank and Jerry find Teddy caught in an old bear trap, they work together to free him and examine his injured leg. His account of harsh treatment by Bill Nackerson gives their help a purpose beyond the day's outing. Quincy Allen's story offers readers a view of friendship built around camping, hunting and photography, with cold weather and another boy's distress testing the friends' readiness to act.
