The chapter How I Tumbled Downhill has a narrator who says it is not easy for one to believe that he ever was a cub, though he knows he was and that it was only nine years ago.
The narrator describes a game in which Kahwa would take her stand with her back against the rock by their door, and it was his business to come charging up the hill at her and try to pull her down. The narrator says that mother could hit hard when she liked, and that he has seen her smack father in a way that would have broken all the bones in a cub's body. The narrator says that in the town they could see lights streaming from many of the buildings and hear the shouting of men's voices, and that they felt sure Kahwa was somewhere among those houses.
