About this book
From Normandy to the mountain valleys of Béarn, Louisa Stuart Costello records a tour shaped by old buildings, local stories and encounters along the road. Her account, published in two volumes in 1844, passes through Le Mans, Poitiers, La Rochelle, Bordeaux and Agen before exploring Pau and the Pyrenees. Castles and cathedrals prompt historical recollections, while the places associated with Henry of Navarre give the tour a recurring interest in royal history.
Costello also makes room for regional songs, folklore and the beliefs attached to particular places. The passage about Françonnette follows her growing affection for Pascal after he offers her blessed bread in church. A frightening prediction then turns that happiness into concern for his safety. For readers interested in travel writing and local tradition, the book shows how a visitor brings scenery, remembered events and retold stories together in a personal account of the region.
