About this book

Chivalry becomes a test of judgment as Richard I and Saladin confront one another during the Third Crusade. Walter Scott's 1825 historical novel places royal ambition beside ideals of courage and generosity. In his introduction, Scott describes the contrast between Richard's impetuous force and Saladin's political prudence, and explains how a Scottish tradition about a healing amulet helped shape the story.

Sir Kenneth's endangered reputation brings these competing loyalties into sharper focus. In the excerpt, the physician El Hakim urges the Scottish knight to seek protection under Saladin, while Kenneth responds with bitter concern for his honour. Their conversation also opens onto proposals for peace, pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the interests dividing the allied princes. Readers interested in medieval adventure will find a novel concerned with the cost of allegiance and the distance between knightly ideals and political bargaining.
