About this book

A very rich merchant has six children, three sons and three daughters. The youngest daughter is so admired that she is called Beauty, which makes her sisters jealous. The merchant loses his whole fortune except a small country house far from town, and tells his children they must go there and work for their living. The two eldest daughters say they will not leave the town, while Beauty chooses to go with her father to comfort and attend him.

In a dream, a fine lady tells Beauty that her good action in giving up her own life to save her father's shall not go unrewarded. The title names the Beast, who appears in the frontispiece attacking the merchant. In another passage a prince explains that a wicked fairy condemned him to remain in the shape of a Beast. The story is told in plain language and the title page promises engravings.
