About this book

Elizabeth Keckley writes from the position of someone whose own history became closely entangled with the Lincoln household. Published in 1868, her autobiography begins with memories of being born into slavery at Dinwiddie Court-House in Virginia. She selects episodes that helped form her character and reflects on the denial of liberty, the persistence of injustice and the difficulty of judging people's motives from their public actions alone.

Her work as a dressmaker and her friendship with Mary Lincoln give the account its second focus. In the White House scenes, public history takes on the scale of a private room: Keckley describes tending Mrs. Lincoln during her grief and watching Robert and Tad comfort their mother. The contents also include letters from Mrs. Lincoln.
