About this book
The Churches of Paris, from Clovis to Charles X is by Sophia Beale, with illustrations by the author. A suggestion to write on the debate of the Sainte-Chapelle leads, the book says, to a series of portraits in verse, of the canons, the singers, the precentor, and the treasurer. The canons are described with equal vivacity, their failings and follies, their idleness and their gluttony, brought into the pure light of day.
The book discusses panels, among them S. Louis learning to read at his mother's knee and The Coronation of Charlemagne by Leo III. in the old basilica of S. Peter, by Henri Lévy. Saint-Vincent de Paul is described as built on the plan of the early Roman basilicas, begun by Lepère in 1824 and finished from designs by Hittorf. The text advises that anyone who requires fashion should not go east of the Louvre.
