About this book
Elizabeth Boyle O'Reilly's study covers French cathedrals of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, with drawings by A. Paul de Leslie. An illustration shows the southern arm of the transept of Soissons Cathedral, about 1180. The first chapter, What Is Gothic Architecture?, is outlined in the contents as a path from Romanesque to Gothic, through Cluny, the regional schools of Normandy, Burgundy, Auvergne, Poitou, Languedoc and Provence, and the birth of Gothic art.
One passage quotes Camille Enlart on Romanesque art and describes the basilica plan that Rome gave to western Europe. Another turns to the banner of Jeanne la Pucelle, carried into the church at Rheims, and to her letter to her friends there. Another page quotes Guizot and notes that the cathedral of Évreux, unlike Lisieux, joins several styles.
