About this book
C. King Eley describes the fabric of Carlisle Cathedral and gives a brief history of the episcopal see, with twenty-nine illustrations. The history says Henry founded and endowed a priory of regular Augustinian canons in 1123, with his chaplain as first prior, and founded the see of Carlisle ten years later, in 1133. At the endowment he laid on the altar a horn, the cornu eburneum, now lost, as proof of the grants of tithes.
The description of the choir mentions stalls with tabernacle-work said to have been added by Prior Haithwaite after 1430, and a carved king's head supposed to represent Henry IV. The Dean's stall is on the left of the choir entrance and the Bishop's on the right. A list of bishops includes Samuel Goodenough (1808-1827), whose entry quotes an epigram on a sermon he preached before the House of Lords.
