About this book
J. E. Bygate, A.R.C.A., describes the fabric of Durham Cathedral and gives a brief history of the episcopal see, with forty-four illustrations. Passages on early Northumbria name Edwin, who received baptism at the hands of Paulinus, and Oswald, who became king in 634. Another turns to Iona, where Columba, a monk said to be a descendant of the Irish kings, lived in exile from 563 and founded a great missionary monastery.
A later description covers the Tomb of S. Cuthbert, a platform thirty-seven feet long and twenty-three feet wide, six feet above the floor of the chapel, with the bones of the saint beneath a slab in the centre. It is reached by two doors through the Neville screen and by a small stairway from the south aisle. A note on S. Mary-the-Less, a small Norman church in the South Bailey, mentions restorations in 1846-7.
