About this book

H. J. L. J. Massé writes about the abbey church of Tewkesbury, with some account of the priory church of Deerhurst, Gloucestershire. A passage on the early history cites the chronicle: Hugh, Earl of the Mercians, had the body of Berthric, King of Wessex, buried in the chapel of St. Faith in 799 or 800, and Hugh himself was buried at Tewkesbury in 812. The priory suffered from the invading Danes and by 980 was a cell dependent on the abbey at Cranbourn in Dorset.

Elsewhere a page from the Registrum Theokusburiae shows two knights in armour, each holding a model of a church and together supporting a shield with the arms of the abbey. A display case holds broken parts of tomb figures, among them one with an inverted torch said to represent Gilbert de Clare, who died at Bannockburn in 1314, and iron rings from the coffin of Sir Hugh le Despenser, removed when the tomb was inspected in 1875.
