About this book

The text is set in Eyrie, a mining camp that once had dance halls, saloons, gambling houses and a jail, came back to life when the hardrock men arrived, and then emptied out. Cabins sag, grass grows in the streets and saplings push up beside the porch of the Eyrie House. A blurb says that two old-timers have hated each other for years and meet twice a day in the deserted camp to speak and part.

In the pages sampled, one of the two men is a hardrock man who is ashamed to wash sand in a cradle but does it for a steady four or five dollars, and who keeps faith that the barren rock lies above the mother lode. They go down for supplies hostilely and come back as enemies, season after season. In another passage Jake and Bill compare notes about dust that went missing, and Jake asks what they ever fussed about.
