About this book

On Piceance Creek in the Colorado back country, June Tolliver keeps house for her father in a lonely cabin, with no woman for miles around. She is ragged, proud and quick with her hands, and she senses that her father carries a shameful secret from their early years in Brown's Park. The secret walks in one evening in the shape of Jake Houck, a big, cold-eyed stranger who calls Pete Tolliver an old partner and clearly has some hold over him.

William MacLeod Raine wrote this Western in 1922, and its real interest lies in courage. Bob Dillon, a timid young ranch hand who lets the other men push him around, has to find what Dud Hollister calls the nerve to "crawl his hump sudden" before he can stand up for June.

Expect bunkhouse poker, cattle brands, the Rio Blanco country, Ute riders and a long, tense trail, all told with a light hand for cowboy talk.
