About this book
Benita, an African romance is by H. Rider Haggard. A note says that its author believes the story to have a certain foundation in fact, and tells of an adventurous trader hearing from some natives the legend of a great treasure buried in or about the sixteenth century by a party of Portuguese. Mr. Clifford suggests that they had better get out of the place as fast as they can.
Meyer looks at the oxen which had been outspanned, and says that nine worn-out and footsore oxen will not draw the waggon. As the mist cleared off, Benita saw that without doubt it was a waggon, for there stood the long row of oxen, and that it had just been captured by the Matabele, for these were about it in numbers. Benita says, I thank the Molimo, and accept his gift, and Tamas rises, advances and casts the ancient, tragic thing over her head.
