About this book

The contents list chapters called, among others, 'The Shipwreck', 'A Friendless Sufferer' and 'Beryl Makes a Request'. The book states that it was formerly issued as Coral and Beryl. Beryl says she does not think she would mind it much and that there is nothing she likes better than being in the water.

The text describes Mr. Hollys as a tall, brown-haired, brown-bearded man, not yet forty years of age, whose countenance showed little trace of the sorrow which had darkened his early life. Beryl says she is quite glad that papa thought of getting her a governess and likes Miss Burton a great deal better than Aunt Cecilia. Beryl, who could swim, throws off her jacket and hat and leaps into the water as a boy rises to the surface.
