About this book

Eglanton Thorne's Phil's mother follows a ragged, yellow-haired boy named Phil. The contents list fourteen chapters, from "Something Happens to Phil" and "In the Hospital" to "Phil's Prayer Is Answered" and "Pardon and Peace." In one passage Phil, wet through and short of coppers, waits beneath a theatre portico in the Strand hoping for pennies, and looks at dark bruises on his thin arm. A gentleman who stops to speak to him decides that a boy who talks of his mother as Phil does must be thoroughly bad. The mother is Moll Dutton.

In another passage Miss Austen is at work in her garden when the minister, Mr. Fennell, calls and says he wishes to become acquainted with all his flock. Elsewhere the narration speaks of Phil's new life with Aunt Lizzie, who nurses and amuses him, so that he no longer needs to go out and beg.
