About this book

A bird struggling to feed a cicada to its chick gives John Burroughs an occasion to study patience, family life and the difficulty of a meal. His outdoor essays follow birds and bees, then widen their attention to apples, winter visitors and smaller animals. The collection brings together observations of nests and their dangers with accounts of creatures encountered around fields, trees and homes.

Burroughs describes movement, calls and nesting choices closely, while imagining the birds' exchanges as familiar human conversations. A male bluebird's changing notes, a pair's selection among nest boxes and a mother bird's concern at a watching cat turn small incidents into extended scenes. Readers interested in natural history and the essay form can find here a record of attentive watching, with everyday animal behavior supplying both the subject and the drama.
