About this book

Western forests and mountain parks give John Muir a subject that joins close observation with a plea for preservation. These nature essays range across Yellowstone, Yosemite, Sequoia and General Grant, while separate chapters examine Yosemite's forests, wild gardens, birds, animals and streams. In the opening, Muir argues that people worn down by work can recover something essential through contact with wild places. His concern is both their enjoyment and their lasting protection.

The account becomes particularly concrete in his descriptions of forest animals. A gray squirrel searches old cones for seeds, a Douglas squirrel races through the trees, and a chipmunk gathers food for winter while competing with its energetic neighbor. Muir gives each creature a distinct manner, turning habits of feeding and movement into lively portraits. Readers interested in nature writing or the history of conservation can follow how an argument for public parks grows from attention to their smallest inhabitants.
