About this book

Low shores, hidden waterways and boats give Margery Allingham's Restoration adventure its uneasy setting. Set on Mersea Island during the reign of Charles II, the novel belongs to a coastal world of smugglers and sailors. Its middle passage follows Blueneck carrying heavy kegs across the shingle under Pet Salt's harsh direction. A distant lantern forces them to crouch in silence before they reach Ben Farran's boat.

The scene makes danger physical: awkward loads, aching limbs, darkness and a cramped cabin matter as much as threats spoken aloud. Pet Salt's bargaining brings the captain known as Spanish Dick into the conversation, tying this difficult night's work to the people around him. Published in 1923, the book offers readers historical adventure with a strong sense of shoreline life, where fear and dependence shape dealings between the characters.
