About this book
Roger Trevose sees a voyage to the Spanish seas as a way to rescue his family's heavily burdened estate. Standing on Plymouth Hoe in June 1586, he imagines the wealth a captured treasure ship might bring. His friend Harry Edgwyth is more cautious, weighing the risks and his responsibility for his sister. The two young men nevertheless pledge to sail together, share their dangers and divide whatever they gain.
Harry Collingwood's historical sea adventure sets these hopes against the practical demands of life far from home. In a later island episode, Roger and Bevan explore the shore, spot fish in clear water and uncover turtle eggs in the sand. Finding food for their companions becomes an immediate concern. Written for younger readers, the novel offers a view of friendship and ambition through both plans for bold ventures and the small tasks on which survival depends.
