About this book

With his ship ready to sail from a Greek harbour, Captain Arkal grows impatient for a prince from Albion. Bladud arrives with his friend Dromas and prepares to leave companions who have shared his studies, travels and athletic contests. Their farewell brings a quieter concern into the seafaring adventure: Bladud asks Dromas to remember their discussions about the gods, the future life and the difficulties of human conduct.

R. M. Ballantyne gives this historical novel for younger readers both maritime settings and scenes of practical outdoor work. A later passage follows Bladud and his puppy, Brownie, through a wooded valley where pigs feed on acorns. Brownie's reckless approach to a boar calls for quick action from the prince, followed by care and correction. Bladud then chooses a sheltered place to build a home. Friendship, responsibility and the contrast between confidence and inexperience give these episodes interest beyond their immediate dangers.
