About this book

Sent down from Oxford after a brawl, young Richard Chandos falls in with the cool and capable Jonathan Mansel, and the two set off for the mountains of Austria to recover a fortune hidden at the bottom of a well beneath a ruined castle. Standing in their way is 'Rose' Noble, a ruthless and clever criminal who means to have the treasure himself, and the contest becomes a tense game of nerve, ambush, and betrayal. First of Dornford Yates's Chandos adventures, this 1927 thriller pairs clubland manners with real menace and a fast, muscular pace. It was among the most popular English adventure novels of its day.
