About this book

Set in Paris during the First World War, this 1917 adventure follows Captain Patrice Belval, a wounded officer who falls for Coralie, a nurse whose life is suddenly under threat. The two learn that their fates were bound together long before they met, and that a fortune in hidden gold lies at the center of the danger stalking them. As kidnappers, poison, and old secrets close in, help arrives from an unexpected quarter: Arsene Lupin himself, working under another name. Maurice Leblanc blends wartime atmosphere with the twists of a treasure hunt and keeps the identity of the villain hidden until late. Translated by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos, it is free to read as a PDF and EPUB edition.
