About this book

The Madness of Mr. Lister appears under the heading Captains All, Book 9, with the name W.W. Jacobs. Old Jem Lister, of the Susannah, is described as possessed of two devils, the love of strong drink and avarice, and the only thing the twain had in common was to get a drink without paying for it. Mr. Lister is told that his conduct was reflecting discredit upon men who were fully able to look after themselves in that direction. Bill Henshaw is the spokesman, and says that if there is anything he hates in this world, it is a drinking miser.

A cook reminds Jem of what he said about the pains in his inside, and about its being a relief to die. The mate says Jem is sitting up on the fore-hatch, having come aboard with him, and the cook says in a trembling voice that he is afraid he has made a mistake.
