About this book

A quiet afternoon in Binchester changes when Edward Tredgold spots a young visitor from his estate agency office. Miss Drewitt has come for the key to her uncle Captain Bowers's cottage in Dialstone Lane. Tredgold offers to help with a supposedly awkward lock, but she quickly sees through his excuse. The cottage itself carries the captain's seafaring habits into domestic life, with a room fitted like a ship's cabin and a lookout mast in the garden.

W. W. Jacobs builds this comic novel around provincial manners, sea captains, voyages and treasure. In a later scene, Captain Brisket announces that he has secured the Fair Emily for Mr. Chalk. Mrs. Chalk's misunderstanding of the name turns the news into a tangle of anxious hints and improvised explanations. The appeal lies in these conversations: confident speakers make their own difficulties worse, while small social encounters acquire the tension of an adventure.

W. W. Jacobs

W. W. Jacobs (William Wymark Jacobs, 1863 to 1943) was an English writer born in London, the son of a wharf manager. He drew on that dockside world for comic stories of sailors and night watchmen, though he is best remembered for the chilling tale "The Monkey's Paw."
