About this book

A Memory of the Southern Seas is by Louis Becke and is taken from "Chinkie's Flat And Other Stories." The writer says that in other works by the present writer frequent allusion has been made, either by the author or by other persons, to Captain Hayes. The writer says that Hayes told him other stories as well of his strange, wild career, including one of Gordon of Khartoum, whom he had known. The writer also says a chronometer watch was committed to his care by Hayes, with an inscription from Isaac Steuart, of New York, to Captain William Henry Hayes, of Cleveland, Ohio.

A passage on whales says that towards the end of winter an enormous number of whales appear on the Australian coast, coming from the cold Antarctic seas. In a tale of the islands, a speaker says, "As for Pule-o-Vaitafe, I care not a blade of grass, and for Tamavili even less." Someone gives Manaia one of six rifles in his boat and two score and ten cartridges, some tobacco, matches, and a pipe.
