About this book
Bodily Changes in Pain, Hunger, Fear, and Rage, by Walter B. Cannon, discusses methods of demonstrating adrenal secretion and its nervous control. The account asks why excitation persisted after stimulation ended, following a report of a dog enraged by seeing a cat for five minutes and secreting little gastric juice during the next fifteen minutes.
An intestinal-muscle experiment alternates blood from the same animal in excited and quiet states, recording inhibition with excited blood and renewed rhythmic beats with quiet blood. The account notes that some other instances produced lower muscle tonus and notably slower beats without abolishing them altogether. The discussion of neurones suggests that outlying neurones may modify impulses received from the central source.
