About this book
The Origin and Nature of the Emotions; Miscellaneous Papers by George Washington Crile gathers eight papers that the preface says may serve as a supplement to earlier volumes and as a preface to monographs in preparation. The experimental discussion compares the effects of trauma under ether and nitrous oxid anesthesia, reporting approximately one-fourth as much exhaustion under the latter for equal trauma. The argument concludes that ether anesthesia produces unconsciousness but apparently does not protect brain-cells against exhaustion from the trauma of surgical operations.
The discussion states that a certain number of brain-cells are permanently lost in exhaustion resulting from emotion or physical work. The conclusions describe animals as transformers of energy, adapting to their environment through organs that convert potential energy into heat and motion.
