About this book
Book Repair and Restoration is a manual of practical suggestions for bibliophiles by Mitchell S. Buck. The foreword says the chapters contain suggestions partly gathered from the experience of others and partly evolved for the writer in caring for his own books. The book also includes some translated selections from Essai sur l'art de Restaurer les Estampes et les Livres, par A. Bonnardot, Paris 1858.
For a torn page, the text says the edges of any tears should be neatly joined with paste, with a clean sheet of white paper placed under the torn part. Writing in the year 1345, Richard de Bury remarks that when defects are found in books, they should be repaired at once. A note says Bonnardot discusses in considerable detail various opinions as to the removal of iron oxide stains, without coming to any definite conclusion except that they are of all stains the most tenacious.
