About this book
Paper and Printing Recipes is a volume with nearly two hundred valuable recipes for stationers, printers, bookbinders and others. The recipes are said to be thoroughly practical, such as come up in every day's work, gathered from many sources and endorsed by the best workmen of the United States and Europe.
The index groups its entries under headings such as, among others, writing inks, gilding, metals, type, printers' rollers and lye. One recipe says common writing ink may be removed from paper without injury to the print by oxalic acid and lime, carefully washing it in water before restoring it to the volume. Another recipe says the edges of the leaves of books are gilded while in the binders' press, by first applying a composition formed of four parts of Armenian bole and one of sugar candy, ground together to a proper consistence. A recipe on color impressions of a leaf takes up a very little color on the dabber and works it about on the center of the paper until the dabber is evenly covered with a thin coating.
