About this book
The Grey Friars in Oxford is in two parts: a history of the convent and biographical notices of the friars, together with appendices of original documents. Andrew G. Little of Balliol College, Oxford, states in his preface that the aim is to give an account of the outward life of the Franciscans. The title page is dated 1892.
One passage follows how the friars acquired land and houses in Oxford. The citizens subscribe forty-three marks to buy a house in St. Ebbe's, to house the Friars Minors for ever, and the text names Agnellus, Albert and Haymo of Faversham. Elsewhere the book lists fifteenth-century wills that leave sums of money to the four orders of friars at Oxford, among them the wills of John Russel in 1469 and of Robert Abdy, Master of Balliol College, in 1483. The book also includes a Latin exchange between a prior and a Friar Minor about money.
