About this book
Brief guide is credited to National Gallery of Art. The guide says that the National Gallery of Art belongs to all the people of the United States of America, and that, established by a joint resolution of Congress, it is supported by public appropriation. The guide says that the Board of Trustees consists of four public servants, ex officio, and five private citizens, with the Chief Justice of the United States as Chairman of the Board.
The guide says that the paintings and sculpture given by the founder, Andrew W. Mellon, comprise works by the greatest masters from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century and have formed a nucleus of high quality around which the collection has grown. The guide says that Samuel H. Kress gave to the nation his great collection of paintings and sculptures of the Italian schools ranging from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries. Under Gallery 55, the guide lists Jean-Honoré Fragonard's A Young Girl Reading, painted c. 1776.
