About this book
Bristol Bells is a story of the eighteenth century by Emma Marshall. The preface says the incidents in the life of Thomas Chatterton that are introduced into the story are gathered chiefly from Mr Masson's exhaustive essay and a biography of the poet by Mr Chatterton Dix. The preface adds that several citizens of Bristol appear in the tale, and that the other characters are wholly imaginary.
Bryda hesitates over a flight to Bristol, which is called a serious matter for a country-bred village maiden. Characters speak of Bristol bells calling, of a mad fellow writing and scribbling verses, and of Felix Farley's Journal. Mr Lambert, the lawyer, speaks to Miss Palmer about the debt which her grandfather is unable to pay.
