About this book

Greyfriars Bobby, by Eleanor Atkinson, introduces Bobby as only a little country dog, the very youngest and smallest and shaggiest of Skye terriers. Bobby has come to the weekly market with Auld Jock, a farm laborer, and gives a startled yelp when the time-gun booms from Edinburgh Castle. Bobby finds a soldier from the Castle lounging in Auld Jock's inglenook, stands stock still for a shocked instant, then howls dismally and bolts for the door.

Mr. John Traill, the proprietor, asks the dog "Whaur's Auld Jock?" Eight score of warring bells contend to be heard from Leith Harbor to the Burghmuir, and Greyfriars alone is silent in that babblement, for it had lost tower and bell in an explosion of gunpowder. The Grand Leddy talks fairy stories to bairns in holiday duddies, with the wee dog lolling at her feet, and tells them about a pretty country place near London called Holly Lodge.
