About this book
Penshurst Castle in the Time of Sir Philip Sidney is a work by Emma Marshall. The preface says that Sir Philip Sidney is the central figure in this story of the spacious times of great Elizabeth, and that his short life of thirty-one years is crowded with achievements as scholar, poet, statesman and soldier. Mrs Ratcliffe stands always upon her dignity before her household and never forgets that she was the daughter of a Knight of the Shire. George Ratcliffe finds his mother seated at the head of the long table, where the men and maidens employed on the farm are gathered at the lower end.
One man says of a pretty maiden in the Countess’s following that he lays a wager he will get a smile from her, and another replies that she has eyes for no one but Mr Sidney. A speaker recalls standing by the open grave together with a mistress whose life had been bound up in her noble brother’s.
