About this book
Weir of Hermiston is an unfinished romance by Robert Louis Stevenson, with an introduction describing a cairn among the heather in a remote moorland parish. Kirstie Elliott keeps a trim house and a good country table at Hermiston, taking charge of the household as a neighbouring bonnet-laird's sister. Kirstie runs the house with her whole intemperate soul, in a bustle that is not without buffets. The household account says Kirstie's lack of piety beyond what decency required caused Mrs. Weir many anxious thoughts and tearful prayers.
Lord Hermiston holds Kirstie in particular regard and readily jokes with her, but would be quite unprepared to learn that she hates him.
