About this book
Brother Jacob is by George Eliot. The text says that, among the many fatalities attending the bloom of young desire, that of blindly taking to the confectionery line has not, perhaps, been sufficiently considered. The text asks how the son of a British yeoman, fed principally on salt pork and yeast dumplings, is to know that there is satiety for the human stomach.
A passage says that no position could be suited to Mr. David Faux that was not in the highest degree easy to the flesh and flattering to the spirit, though at that particular period he was weighing out gingerbread nuts. A speaker allows that a man is uncommonly knowing but asks how he came to go to the Indies, calling it unnatural in a confectioner. Mr. Palfrey leaves the shop, and the text names as his most pressing business going home to tell his daughter that Freely was a poor sneak, probably a rascal, and that her engagement was broken off.
