About this book

The narrator describes a churchyard with a tall, bare oak before a copse of evergreens and scattered gravestones mostly hidden by long grass. A tall, dark figure in a large French cloak passes from the other side of the church and pauses by the copse. The narrator hears the figure sobbing on the ground and weighs whether to wait or proceed along a path that leads past him.

Lord Dawton works at a table covered with pamphlets and reference books and asks Pelham to find the date of the Council of Pisa. The narrator's inspection of a bedroom reveals pistols and a sword on a table at the foot of the bed, illuminated by a rush-light in the grate.
