About this book
Sheltering from rain in Norton Bury, Phineas Fletcher notices a hungry boy whose strong hands contrast with his own difficulty walking. The boy introduces himself as John Halifax and asks Phineas's father, Abel, for work. Abel, a prosperous Quaker tanner, offers him payment to take his son home in a hand-carriage. This opening encounter gives the 1856 novel a personal view of poverty, kindness and the trust that can grow between strangers.
The town's stocking-looms, narrow alley and grand mayor's house bring working lives and social distinctions into the same street. In a later scene, John receives Lord Luxmore in his family home and argues that people should enjoy protection and opportunities to serve the state regardless of their religious beliefs. Craik's novel offers readers English social fiction told through a narrator attentive to gestures, conversation and character. Its everyday encounters connect private loyalties with questions of class, work and conscience.
