About this book

At a mountain cottage in California, Walt Irvine and Madge try to gain the affection of a brown dog whose size and movements suggest a wolf. They feed and shelter him, but he repeatedly travels north after being set free. These departures give the title story a tension between the couple's care and an instinct they struggle to explain. Orchards, wooded trails and the spring where the dog first rests establish the setting in small physical details.

Selected by Franklin K. Mathiews, Jack London's short stories bring adventure together with questions about trust and understanding. In another story, Nam-Bok describes machines and a crowded city to villagers who dispute what he has seen. Their arguments reveal how familiar experience shapes belief, while his frustration makes the exchange personal. The collection suits readers interested in animal stories and in dialogue that turns a surprising report into a clash of perspectives.
