About this book

On the cattle ranges of northern New Mexico, an old gray wolf called Lobo leads a small pack that repeatedly defeats the ranchers' efforts to stop it. Ernest Thompson Seton opens this collection with the wolf's strength, caution and knowledge of the canyons around Currumpaw. The other named histories concern Redruff, Raggylug and Vixen, giving the volume a series of animal lives rather than a single continuous plot.

Seton presents these accounts as true histories, explaining that he translates animal sounds, scents and gestures into human speech. In the rabbit story, young Rag waits in a hidden swamp nest under his mother's instructions to stay still, until curiosity draws him toward an unfamiliar noise. The accounts connect close observation with scenes of danger, hunting and survival. Readers interested in animal behavior can follow how individual creatures learn, evade enemies and respond to the places they inhabit.
