About this book
Bureaucracy by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley, has chapters called The Rabourdin Household, Monsieur des Lupeaulx and The Teredos Navalis, Otherwise Called Ship-Worm. The chapter headed The Rabourdin Household introduces Monsieur Rabourdin at a moment when he is head of a bureau.
The text says that long practical experience had taught Rabourdin that perfection is brought about in all things by changes in the direction of simplicity, and that his system depended on the weeding out of officials and the establishment of a new order of administrative offices. Colleville says Monsieur Cochin signs E. A. L. Cochin, which, when anagrammed, gives Cochineal. Fleury tells Dutocq that it is known for certain that he filched those papers from Monsieur Rabourdin.
