About this book

An apple tree, a map of Asia and a handbook supply the starting point for Louisa Jebb Wilkins and her companion, called X. Published in 1909, this travel account follows a route through Asia Minor towards the Tigris, Baghdad and Damascus. X sketches the route across mountains and rivers, while the narrator explains their preference for flexible arrangements. Food, transport and shelter become part of the story as the pair put their rough plan into practice.

The chapter headings lead from the Taurus Mountains to a raft supported by goatskins and onward across the Syrian desert. In the river excerpt, an encounter with armed men prompts a boatman to describe the risks faced by local traders. Humour and confidence sit beside danger and unequal protection. Readers interested in older travel writing can follow both the practical details of movement and the social assumptions through which the narrator interprets the people she meets.
