About this book
By Proxy is by Randall Garrett, with illustrations by Van Dongen. The introductory line says it has been said that the act of creation is a solitary thing, but that sometimes a team may be needed to make creation effective. Terrence Elshawe did not conform to the mental picture that pops into the average person's mind when he hears the words news reporter.
The only reason for Winstein's prowling around was the way his mind worked, which was forever bubbling with ideas. Winstein asks Elshawe whether he remembers a guy by the name of Malcom Porter. Porter says he has invented something as radically new as the Law of Gravity was in the Seventeenth Century, and tells Mr. Feldstein he is not going to break any laws unless he has to. A speaker recalls a gadget that hopped up into the air and floated down again, calling it a toy for children as far as he was concerned.
